At the first sign of falling leaves and cooler temperatures, a wave of pride and nostalgia washes over HBCU students & alumni. Autumn marks the start of Homecoming Season — an annual tradition on campuses all across the country. But for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, homecoming is way more than just a football game or a reason to reunite the group chat. It’s a pilgrimage, a regrounding in our roots, and when done right, an opportunity to reconnect with your people and bond over shared values and memories. A true display of Black excellence, this tradition brings together people from all walks of life to represent the qualities that make HBCUs so special: resilience, pride, and a sense of belonging in spaces that once felt exclusionary.
These institutions, born out of necessity during a time when Black students were systematically excluded, have always been safe harbors and incubators of innovation.
Homecoming reinforces this legacy by creating an intergenerational gathering where Black joy and progress is the goal. The energy on campus is palpable and the traditions that embody this experience are nothing short of legendary:
Battle of the Bands: Never mind the score; the marching band is the main event – both teams won’t be making any plans for the Rose Bowl. HBCU bands are world-renowned for their explosive performances with carefully executed drill patterns, choreography, and chest-thumping drumlines, these bands transform the field into a symphony in unison. This Battle is a musical showdown where precision, artistry, creativity, and sheer volume determine the victor, not the scoreboard.
The Divine Nine Step & Stroll Shows: The presence of Divine Nine (D9) fraternities and sororities is absolutely central to the HBCU, and homecoming experience. Throughout the festivities, chapters from universities across the country compete in step shows, performing complex routines while wearing their signature colors. At any given moment, you can catch groups of frats and sorors breaking into a spontaneous stroll on the yard, belting out their calls & chants — a powerful display of unity, pride, and heritage that always draws a crowd (and can be an effective thirst trap if executed correctly.)
The Grand Homecoming Tailgate: This isn’t just a pre-game — it’s the ultimate Black family reunion. HBCU tailgates are legendary: elaborate soul food spreads, custom tents repping graduating classes or Greek orgs, and a non-stop mix of music, vibes, and laughter. It’s the central hub for reconnecting across generations— forging connections, sharing memories, and opening the door for future collaboration.
Beyond the fluff and fun, Homecoming serves other critical functions:
Networking and Professional Equity: Homecoming can be a strategic goldmine for young professionals. The sheer concentration of successful Black leaders, executives, and entrepreneurs creates unmatched opportunities for mentorship, internships, and job placement. Alumni return with the explicit intention of finding ways to give back, helping cultivate the pipeline for the next generation of Black talent.
Financial and Institutional Investment: For schools that may have funding challenges, homecoming can be a crucial fundraising period. Alumni often make significant donations to scholarships, academic programs, and the university’s general fund— helping to offset the historical and systemic underfunding of HBCUs. Meanwhile, the influx of tens of thousands of visitors provides a substantial economic boost to local businesses and Black-owned vendors on and around campus. The numbers don’t lie:
- North Carolina A&T drew over 130,000 attendees to Homecoming festivities in 2024.
- Jackson State University recently recorded 50,000+ fans for a single homecoming game.
- Alabama A&M raised a record-breaking $2.5 million in funding, thanks to alumni and D9 chapters.
Preserving the Legacy: Every year, homecoming bridges the gap between past, present, and future. It gives current students the chance to connect with the trailblazers who paved the way — reinforcing the purpose and pride behind an HBCU education. It’s a testament to endurance, a celebration of culture, and a powerful affirmation that these institutions continue to be essential pillars of success and advancement in the Black community.
