The 2025 Met Gala returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 5th, presenting an evening dedicated to celebrating Black excellence and sartorial mastery. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s pivotal work, Slaves to Fashion, and honored the deep-rooted tradition of Black dandyism. The theme explored the evolution of Black men’s fashion from the 18th century to the present, spotlighting the impact of self-presentation on identity within the African diaspora.
A Tailored Tribute to Black Style

The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition featured twelve thematic sections, including “Ownership,” “Presence,” and “Cool,” each dedicated to showcasing the relationship between fashion and Black cultural identity. Over 300 years of style were displayed through garments, artwork, and photography, illustrating the nuanced way in which Black men have used fashion as a form of expression, resistance, and artistry.
The dress code, “Tailored for You,” encouraged guests to reimagine classic tailoring with modern flair, blending tradition with contemporary elements in a way that honored Black dandyism’s rich history.
